Zheng's Pirate Junk

This work studies the legendary junk of Zheng Yi Sao, the feared Chinese pirate, through the quiet language of pen and ink. The hull rises with heavy symmetry, its body anchored in patient lines, while the sails unfold in layered rhythm like the ribs of some great sea creature. Each rope and spar is rendered with deliberate precision, a net of geometry that holds together a vessel born of both myth and saltwater.

The dragon traced along the prow suggests more than decoration. It is the ship’s spirit, a silent guardian threading legend into wood and canvas. Flags stir lightly in the composition, their curves breaking the vertical and diagonal order of the rigging, whispering of unseen winds and unmarked horizons.

The drawing captures not only the structure of a warlike craft but also the fragile poise between freedom and peril at sea. Ink, restrained yet alive, becomes the medium where history, rebellion, and the ocean’s endless reach converge. Through its quiet precision, the artwork invites reflection on the shifting line between survival and conquest, law and lawlessness, always written on the waves.
